What Happens Inside an Executive Coaching Session

An “inside look” at the conversations that create clarity, confidence, and meaningful change

Have you ever wondered what it sounds like inside an Executive Coaching session? Here is a “peek behind the curtain” to learn what types of challenges and topics leaders bring to our sessions, and the goal of each of our conversations.

Common Challenges Leaders Bring to Coaching

Many leaders start coaching sessions with a very specific challenge. Others arrive with a general sense that something feels “off,” but they can’t yet name it. Both are valid starting points.

Here are some examples of challenges that are frequently brought to coaching:

  • “I can’t pinpoint what’s causing it, but I feel stuck in a funk. My focus and momentum are off.”

  • “I need to figure out how to have a difficult conversation with my boss or the executive team.”

  • “I have a solid performer who’s doing the bare minimum. How do I motivate more ownership and impact?”

  • “I’ve presented multiple times to senior leadership and can’t seem to get a decision. What needs to shift?”

  • “I received feedback that I need to improve my executive presence, but I don’t know where to start.”

  • “I need to make an important decision, but I keep going back and forth.”

These are the types of issues that often create mental clutter, drain your energy, and impact your focus and clarity. By carving out time to explore and unpack these topics, you can thoughtfully determine your next best action…rather than filing it away as another decision that needs to be dealt with later.

Coaching helps you move beyond quick fixes and instead explore patterns, assumptions, habits, and beliefs that are shaping your responses.

Real Situations, Not General Concepts

It’s important to note that coaching conversations center on real situations you are navigating right now within your organization, culture, and unique set of pressures. Together, we break down the situation, explore what’s happening beneath the surface, and identify new ways forward.

The goal is to help you:

  • See the real issue more clearly

  • Understand what matters most in the moment

  • Identify what’s getting in your way

  • Choose the next step you are fully committed to acting on

A Real World Example of Coaching in Action

Recently, I coached a Marketing leader at a family-owned manufacturing company who had received feedback that she needed to simplify her communication for different audiences and strengthen cross-functional relationships to lead more effectively through influence.

As we explored recent interactions, we identified some patterns. In some cases, her approach unintentionally created defensiveness among peers. In others, her desire to demonstrate expertise led to overly detailed explanations that diluted her message.

Through our work together, she learned to streamline and simplify her communications for different audiences, strengthen trust with peers and the executive team, and navigate cross-functional dynamics more intentionally. This is one of many examples of how coaching helps high-performing leaders recognize behaviors that are holding them back and begin to accelerate the impact they create.
